Preschool Program

The Discovery School – the only museum-based preschool
in California – emphasizes inquiry and exploration through extended, STEM-rich projects inspired by children’s interests and questions. The school is aligned with the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s (BADM) research division, the Center for Childhood Creativity, which provides evidence-based expertise in children’s creativity development. The museum’s 7.5 acre site, educational programs, and surrounding national park beaches, batteries, and hiking trails provide an unparalleled location to learn and grow!

Our preschool program is broken up into two groups based on age: 3 & 4 Years Preschool Class and 4 & 5 Years Preschool Class. Both programs run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Our Approach

The Discovery School is a Reggio-inspired preschool program affiliated with the Center for Childhood Creativity, the research division of the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Our program offers children the freedom to pursue their passions through guided play and inquiry. Our goal is to spark, in each of our students, a lifelong passion for exploration, learning, and creative problem solving. Children are encouraged to make choices, take risks, and spend the time they need to construct their own understanding of the world. We employ a holistic approach, and all experiences are designed to expand a child’s cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and academic development. We also emphasize the process of collaboration, and the importance of self-regulation. In daily activities we take advantage of our inspiring location, exploring the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s exhibitions and the outdoor environment around Fort Baker. Our preschool graduates leave with a thirst for knowledge and creativity, setting them on a path to success.

Your Preschooler's Day at School

From exploring with clay to playing in our unique Fab Lab, beach walks, and small group projects, a day in our preschool program is packed with a variety of hands-on activities that encourage learning through creativity. This learning takes place in our classrooms, in the museum, and on our extensive grounds. Our programs are carefully planned to meet the needs of our learners. The current research from the Center for Childhood Creativity at the Bay Area Discovery Museum informs our planning and ensures the best practice in our programs.

Our daily preschool hours are 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

An example of our daily flow includes:

  • Arrival
  • Morning Meeting with a story, songs, and/or creative movement
